Hello, sub-Q readers. While transitions continue at sub-Q, our whole staff remains committed to regularly publishing and promoting interactive fiction.
That’s why I hope you will join me in welcoming Kerstin Hall as sub-Q’s new editor-in-chief.
Kerstin joined sub-Q in its first few months and, as fiction editor and interviewer, has been vital to its success. Her talent, commitment, and breadth of experience position her well to take sub-Q to new audiences, new authors, and new fiction experiences.
I will indeed remain a part of the magazine in a managerial role–to meet needs in accounting, tech support, and cover art.
Thank you, all of you, so much, for your support these past years. Here’s to years more. The best is yet to be.
Let’s really, really keep this beautiful thing going.
Be well,
Tory Hoke

Hello, sub-Q readers. I hope you are all well and having a peaceful and productive summer.
As sub-Q Magazine enters its third year, I’ve taken a job that has left me without the discretionary time it takes to keep submissions flowing and new stories publishing.
That’s why I hope you will join me in welcoming Devi Acharya as sub-Q’s new editor-in-chief.
Founder of the first IF literary magazine, Inky Path, Devi consulted on the creation of sub-Q and was the first editor to join. Her passion, energy, and depth of knowledge make her the perfect EIC to take sub-Q to new audiences, new authors, and new frontiers of fiction.
I will remain a part of the magazine in a managerial role–to meet needs in accounting, tech support, and cover art.
Thank you, all of you, so much, for your support these past years. Here’s to years more. The best is yet to be.
Let’s keep this beautiful thing going.
Be well,
Tory Hoke

I’m delighted to welcome aboard our new editor, Nicole Delcore, and our new first readers, Gail Marsella and Blaize Kaye.

Nicole is a student and poet pursuing a degree in English at Tufts University. Her interests include playgrounds, dogs, and dyeing her hair unnatural colors.

She joined sub-Q a year ago as a first reader, and I’m grateful for her many hours of service helping choose stories for publication. As editor, she will join our editor rotation to make final selections, prepare contracts, and galley the completed work.

It takes an editor about five hours to pilot a submission to publication. Nicole takes up the commitment alongside Devi, Kerstin, and PJ to bring sub-Q‘s readers their biweekly dose of IF.

In addition, Gail Marsella and Blaize Kaye join us as a first readers.

Gail teaches chemistry at the college level and writes SF on the side.

Blaize lives in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, with his wife, kid, and cat. He spends most of his free time thinking about books and computers.

As first readers, they join Slush Master Stewart Baker and tackle a commitment of two hours a week to read and vet stories fresh from the queue.

These additions to our staff help strengthen and protect sub-Q‘s anonymous submissions process.

Interested in giving Nicole, Gail, and Blaize something new to read? Read our submissions guidelines and submit!

…and they’re partnering with us to do it!

From Strange Horizons2016 fund drive announcement, courtesy Editor-In-Chief Niall Harrison:

The second area we’re hoping you will help us to expand into is interactive fiction. As with translations, this is an area we’ve been open to, without really necessarily having the in-house skills or experience to make it work. But it turns out—if you didn’t already know, that one of our art directors, Tory Hoke, runs a fantastic IF magazine called Sub-Q ,which has published writers such as Yoon Ha Lee, J. Y. Yang, E. Lily Yu, and many more. And so, if we raised US$23,000—our maximum goal this year—we’re going to bring Sub-Q in-house at Strange Horizons, to publish special issues twice per year, under a similar model to Samovar. Sub-Q will pay 9 cents per word.

This is big.

For years, Strange Horizons has solicited and published interactive fiction, including “You Are Here” by Bogi Takács. By partnering twice a year with sub-Q, SH will bring new eyeballs to interactive fiction and new voices to its magazine. We provide the technology, SH selects the fiction, and the stories appear as a Strange Horizons imprint. More details and submissions guidelines will be revealed.

This all depends, of course, on Strange Horizons reaching their final stretch goal.

Get the word out.

And start writing.

We’ve got wonderful things to do.
